Period underwear. Is this the new trend?

I have been seeing so many brands for period underwear lately on Instagram and I have been so curious to try some. I was delighted when Femtis, Germany’s first period underwear brand contacted me. I have been using a menstrual cup for the last three years already but the first two days of my period are so strong that I often need to use a sanitary towel as a back-up or even tampons during the night.

This has changed now as I have been wearing these amazing period underwear. Really comfortable and no need for plastic sanitary towels or tampons any more.

I also think that the female period should not be taboo. It’s something completely natural. We should talk and write about it more openly. I hope you will enjoy my article as much as I enjoyed writing it. 🙂

Why are most period products unsustainable?

In our lives, we women consume an average of 10,000 – 17,000 period products. Did you know that over 45 billion tampons, sanitary napkins, and panty liners are used worldwide each year? (Source: ErdbeerWoche)

This waste is often not only incorrectly disposed in toilets but is generally a problem in terms of its degradability and recyclability as well as the CO2 emitted in the process. And the production of tampons and sanitary napkins is not really environmentally friendly either thanks to the microplastic and bleached cotton. As a result, the question arises of how can we carry something that pollutes the environment so close or even in our bodies.

In my Instagram story survey, I asked you which period products you use. I was positively surprised by how many of you use the menstrual cup. About 70% of you replied saying you either use the cup or the cup and washable pads together.  Only 24% of you use tampons, pads, or sanitary towels. However, only 5% of you, who joined my survey, use period underwear. Most of you replied saying you would be interested in trying them!

How do Femtis panties work?

The period panties have a protective area that consists of several layers and are made of special materials. The period panties are leak-proof and protect you during your period, day and night. You can find even more information about these layers here.

Depending on how heavy your period is, Femtis has different kinds of panties from heavy to light flow. There are currently eight different models, from string to high waist panty.

Why are they cheaper?

You only need to buy these panties once, and they will last for years, whereas tampons and sanitary towels need to be purchased regularly.

Why are they healthier?

In addition to the ecological aspect, there is of course also the aspect of health. Anyone who has used tampons before knows that they can dry out your vagina incredibly. But not only that: tampons are a major cause of vaginal infections as they prevent vaginal cleaning and encourage harmful flora and can contain chemicals that interfere with vaginal flora. Sanitary towels can also contain a lot of harmful synthetic chemicals. The vagina is the most sensitive and absorbent part of your body. Femtis is the first German period panty supplier whose panties are free of silver and other biocides because these can endanger your health and the environment.

My personal experience with Femtis underwear.

I have been using my Femtis panties for 3 months now. I was so excited to try them the first time!

They were delivered super fast and I really like how cheap the delivery cost is. They come in small plastic ZIP bags which are perfect if you need to change your panties on the go. You can also ask the company to neglect these ZIP bags if you don’t need them.

I usually wear my Femtis panties in addition to my menstrual cup, just as a back-up. Especially the first two days of my period are so heavy that my cup often leaks a bit. I used to use sanitary towels but now I wear these panties, and they are much better! They don’t smell, they are very comfortable and I just don’t have to worry about my sometimes leaking cup any more. I have actually tried only wearing panties on the second day of my period and it was definitely a new and interesting experience for me, letting my period flow freely. It definitely felt weird at first but it is actually completely natural.

Femtis suggests changing your panty 1x throughout your day if your period is heavy. So I did that. I washed my Insa panty in cold water right after changing into my ALWA panty. I also wear them in the gym, during yoga or running!

I think, I still prefer wearing my menstrual cup and the panty as well but if your period is not too heavy, wearing only your panties would be completely enough.

In my opinion, the SVEA string panty is the most flattering pair!

I definitely suggest purchasing a few panties so you have enough time to wash and dry them during your period.

How to wash your period panties?

After wearing a pair, it is best to wash the period underwear briefly under cold water. Then you can wash them at 40 °C with your darker clothes. Don’t worry, your panties will be completely clean. And no, you won’t have any blood stains on the rest of the laundry afterwards. 🙂

My advice if you want to try period panties.

If your period is very strong, you can either change your period panties more often or you can use the panties as a back-up with your tampons or menstrual cup.

If you have the feeling, that after using tampons your vagina becomes dried out, period panties could be a good alternative for you.

Since we are all different, I recommend trying out your panties at home first. So you can get used to them and will get confident wearing them.

For some women, tampons cause cramps. Many women have reported that their menstrual pain got better after switching from traditional tampons to period panties or menstrual cups.
